In recent years the use of multimedia has become an immensely important way to impart information using a computer. As the name suggests multimedia involves imparting information by combining more than one type of media, for example, text, audio, video and animations. It takes a great deal of computing power to use more than one type of media. It is because of the current advancements in both computer technology and software design along with the huge drop in computer costs, that the use of multimedia has become a standard on many new computers in use today.

The biggest areas that have benefited from the increase of multimedia usage are education and training, computer games and the World Wide Web. The use of multimedia has made it a lot easier to communicate information on a computer to a widely differing audience in terms of language and culture. It takes a great deal of expertise in the different types of media to be able to create a successful easy to understand multimedia package that can be understood by a wide audience. Unfortunately, sometimes this expertise can be lacking and lead to badly designed multimedia packages.

A big drawback to the successful implementation of multimedia on the Internet is the lack of significant bandwidth in some areas. This can lead to traffic on the Internet moving at a very slow pace.
